Every week, a slew of new music videos hits the web. Watching them at your desk is not time theft because you deserve it; think of it as a nice reward for surviving another work week. But what if you don’t have time to watch every video — maybe you have a deadline, a hungry pet, or other grown-up concerns. In consideration of your schedule, Lizzie and Kaitlyn are kicking off a new series called One Video. Each week we’ll tell you “one video” you need to watch, why, and for how long.
This week, my One Video co-pilot, Kaitlyn Tiffany, is not here to co-pilot, so I, Lizzie, will be piloting this word-plane (sure) myself. Luckily, choosing a video this week was easy, and I wouldn’t have had it any other way, which makes sense since I am in charge.
This week’s video: “Rush” by Starrah
The video for “Rush” is animated, just like last week’s One Video pick, so if you were hoping to see real people this time around, I apologize deeply to you personally. But believe me, after staring at this pastel-colored carnival dream long enough, you’ll be like, “Who needs humans?”
Who is Starrah?
Oh gosh, I’d like to backtrack a bit already from my previous statement. Obviously we all need humans, because without them we wouldn’t have this song. “Rush” is Starrah’s first solo track, but she’s already got songwriting credits on some of the biggest tracks of the past few years: Rihanna’s “Needed Me,” Kevin Gates’ “2 Phones,” and Jeremih’s “Pass Dat.”
What’s special about “Rush” by Starrah?
First of all, and forgive me if this is out of line thematically, but the song itself could honestly carry this video on its own if it needed to. Produced by Retro Future, it’s got a twinkly music box melody floating underneath the slightest trap beat. Starrah told The Fader her music was “an ode to youth,” and if this track doesn’t make you feel you’re simultaneously at the club and in the womb then your human feeling sensors are probably out of whack.

And on top of all that, the actual video, which was created by Amber Park, is equally delightful. There’s a flight through space, go-kart racing, fishing for Swedish fish, a choreographed dance with Sour Patch Kids, a ferris wheel ride over a whipped cream mountain, and other things so immediately pleasant that if I continue to describe them it will make me sound like I’m just making up nice visuals at random.
